Quite a few new DVDs

We got quite a few new DVDs for the library including Czech films offered to us by Andrea Novotna who worked for us in the winter. She offered us some Czech classics such as: Vesničko Má Středisková (my sweet little village), a comedy from the same director as the famous Closely Observed Trains (that we already have in the library), Tankový Prapor, Román pro ženy and Kolja

And I am offering my DVD box of Herzog Kinski, which means: Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu, Cobra Verde, My Best Friend, Aguirre the Wrath of God and Woyzeck! The films are in German though you will also hear other languages such as Spanish, French, Italian etc...

Just wanted to say that we are now having a book sale, lots of colloquial and teach yourself books and cassettes: Welsh, Ukrainian, Tagalog and many other languages. £3 each (book + cassettes).

You will also be able to browse the shelves in the recording room and if anything takes your fancy, we can decide on a price. We have lots of reference material there (Russian, German grammars and dictionaries etc...)

There is now the possibility to BORROW DVDs from the Language Centre collection. Subscription 30 pounds for the year (to be paid for at reception) and you then will be able to borrow up to 2 DVDs per week. There will be no fines.

There are no photocopying charge... but think about trees... and stay in the library perhaps to do the exam there? (plenty of private study rooms)

ARTstor and Bridgeman: Using images in teaching and learning (Thursday, 27 October 2.00-3.00) - This introductory session examines two major digital image collections subscribed to by the University - ARTstor and Bridgeman Education - geared to research and teaching in the humanities, history of science and medicine, and social sciences. Viewing, presenting and managing images are also covered. The focus of this session will be on images for Medieval & Modern Languages, but members of other faculties are welcome to attend. WISER Finding Stuff - Books etc on SOLO (Friday 28 October 9.30-10.30 and repeated Monday 14 November 10.00-10.45). This session introduces SOLO for searching Oxford Libraries and focuses on effective ways of searching SOLO for books, journal titles and other library materials in print and online. It also includes placing "hold requests" for materials in the remote store / bookstacks and for items which are out to other readers, how to use your SOLO "MyAccount" for book renewals and other administration and using the SOLO e-shelf and alerts. WISER Finding Stuff - Journal Articles (Next week's class is now fully booked but this class is repeated Monday 14 November 10.45-12.15). This session is an introduction to finding journal articles to support your research and learning. ALL PAST EXAM PAPERS ARE IN THE LIBRARY! (they are under the periodicals display in a yellow folder)

And I strongly suggest that people studying "new" languages also have a look at other languages, so that they can get a better idea of what is required on the night...

The time has come... and the language laboratories booths are looking fabulously new, because they are... we have been refurbishing last week.

All listening comprehension examinations have been done now.

I would stronly recommend you DO NOT look at the examination papers till you do the test in the condition of the exam: one listen, five minutes break, another listen.
Any question regarding using material etc... do ask me, or my assistants (lunch time and evenings). Plus we have Andrea, visiting from Bayreuth, who will be happy to help for last minutes panics in German, and quite simply also to help you with finding and using the materials.

Do not panic, the language laboratory machines on the first floor will come back soon! We are refurbishing the spaces! I have added a few upstairs (thanks to Martin, our IT Officer, to help me carry those!)

Catch-up Brush-up students

Dear Students,

You are about to study intensively the language of your choice at the Language Centre next week. I very much hope you will have a pleasant journey :-)

It is possible for you to come early and pick up the textbook copy from the library, write the information down in the Library Register, go to class with it, and return it at the end of your class, putting it in the trolley. It is however not possible that all students will be able to borrow the library copy, as those are in limited number. Please do take this into consideration.

Like my predecessor, I am looking after all the languages that people are interested in (about 140 languages so far!), and therefore cannot spend too much of the budget just on textbooks used for one week.

Here we are with WISER session... WISER sessions basically make you... well wiser and you will be more at ease using online library database, citation software etc... etc... I think I have heard, many many times, from students going to these sessions: "I wish I had known earlier!", in order to save you time, and a lot of bother, yes, do try to make it to the WISER session.

Next week's WISER workshops:

WISER: Who's citing you? Tools for tracking citations - Knowing where and how often you're cited is increasingly important for grant and job applications. In addition citation tracking can help you to follow the progress of research over time and to analyse how papers in your research field relate to one another. In this session we introduce citation tracking using Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar and demonstrate how each service can be used to find out who's citing you!
There will be time during the session to practice using each service.
This session is followed by "WISER: Bibliometrics: The Black Art of Citation Ranking" which will examine impact factors in greater detail.

I give tours at 10 am and 2 pm every day of the week, every week of the year (well not when I am on holidays but we always manage to have at least one tour a day in my absence) and the opening hours are as follow:
Monday to Friday this week we are open from 8.45 am till 6.30 pm
and next week, we are open:
Monday to Thursday we are open from 8.45 am till 8 pm
Friday 8.45 till 7 pm
Saturday 10 am to 1 pm

well... "that's all folks"... or rather... "this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship"...

All films that are on DVDs have now been catalogued to Oxford University standards and are now searchable on OLIS and SOLO

The whole list of our videos is available from the library main page as we also have a few good films on VHS still (and VHS machines to go with them of course!)

so if you wish to hear Aramaic, Arabic, English, French, Georgian, German, Italian, Japanese... all the way to Persian, Yiddish and Welsh, and to see some great films too, do pop in here!

All English films on DVDs are now catalogued to standards. And I have to say we have a very decent collection : from classics of British cinema such as Brief Encounter to modern American (US) films based on novels such as the War of the Worlds, from hilarious films (with however some tender moments in them) such as Educating Rita to tragic little pieces like Candy
... I am sure that you will find your cup of tea in there!
For people new to the island, I warmly recommend historical films such as The Madness of King George or films based from novels such as Wuthering heights .

Enjoy the many different English you will hear or just read (yes we have silent films too!)

I am now cataloguing the English collection of films on DVDs, there are quite a few so bare with me for a few days... the list, as with all other films can be found, for the time being, in the main library page, as a word or a pdf document.
Similary to Spanish, English is spoken in a *few* places around the world... I have given more information about the language if the film is not British, for example English (USA) etc...
And as usual, I'm being good and not telling you too much in the summary so that we will still be surprised by the plot ! (apart from Brief Encounter, perhaps but you must have seen this classic of British cinema already! If not... we are open all summer!)

All Arabic, Chinese and Japanese films on DVDs have now been catalogued following Bodleian Libraries standards. I have also taken the opportunity to catalogue our Cantonese and Korean collections too. There are quite a few gems to watch and enjoy I have to say and as usual I have been good and have not told you too much in the summary field...

You can therefore search the catalogues (OLIS/SOLO/COPAC) to see what we have... or you can still have a look at the main library page for the list (arranged like in the library: alphabetical by language)

For the case of Spanish films, I have made the effort of indicating which Spanish it is, ie if it is not from Spain, I have added the country in between brackets. For example: Spanish (Chili) or Spanish (Argentina).

All that will help you in your choice of films!

Most of them, of course, do have English subtitles.

Dear French Tutors and all readers!!!

All French films on DVDs have now been catalogued following Bodleian Libraries standards. You can therefore search the catalogues (OLIS/SOLO/COPAC) to see what we have... or you can still have a look at the main library page for the list (arranged like in the library: alphabetical by language)

You should be able to see if there are subtitles available and in which language (most of the time English). Hope you will enjoy watching all these films... I have been good and not said too much in the summary field so hopefully you will still be surprised by most scenarios.

Where are they? you may ask... well it is just that I am retro-cataloguing the collection so we have removed all the films on DVDs that have not been catalogued onto OLIS/SOLO our Oxford University online catalogues
... the whole list of films is however on our main library page... (list on excel or pdf with indication of subtitles or not and the languages spoken/written/seen... as we also have a film with some Russian sign language) and your DVDs should, one by one, make it back onto the shelves... soyez patients, merci! (be patient, thanks!)

Dear Dutch Tutor - and all readers!

Hallo Karin,

I am happy to tell you that all Dutch material has now been catalogued following AACR2 standards (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition... for those who wanted to know about this acronym!) so it means that you can find all the videos on DVD, all the reference books and all the coursebook material.

You can either use OLIS / SOLO (Oxford University own catalogues) or on COPAC (the National Academic Specialist Libraries catalogue for the UK and Ireland)

You can search if you know what you are looking for (ie you already know the title, or parts of it, or the name of the author etc...) or you can browse by subject if you want to discover what we have.

For example here I know I'm looking for a dictionary and I remember it's called Groot woordenboek, so I type this in the catalogue as a keyword/part of title.
I have no idea what I'm looking for, but I just want to know if there is anything to help me learn Dutch, so I select subject (in SOLO, either advance or simple search screen) and type in Dutch language. Given the high number of results, I go to the right-hand side and select the Language Centre Library. You then should get all the books and audio holdings.

A videocast is available on the right hand side should you need more information on how to search or browse: click on video tutorials (and don't forget to switch on your speakers!)

Anyway... I just wanted to say really that all Dutch holdings are now to be found on the www

The budget for the academic year 2009-2010 is now officially closed.... I went to Blackwell's at lunchtime today and got something in the sales... the Michael Thomas Spanish vocabulary course and the Italian course, in the same series... I am processing them now and there should be on the shelves by the end of the week if not before!
No more spending now... before... next Monday!

Dear Tutors,

I am very happy to say that all Russian books including reference and textbooks and their accompanying materials (as the exception of a handful that I have found impossible to catalogue!) have now been catalogued following AACR2 standards (Anglo-American) and that you can search for them or browse for them in the following catalogues:

OLIS and SOLO http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/eresources the two Oxford Uni catalogues (it is also possible sometimes to see the book covers on SOLO to help your searches)

COPAC (national catalogues of academic libraries) http://copac.ac.uk/

On SOLO especially you can search by entering the authors name and title, or keywords or you can browse by categories such as: russian language grammar / russian language dictionaries / russian language textbooks for foreign speakers English. You can then select Language Centre Library only (right-hand side). That should give you all the books on that subject that are in the library.

Trying out library books

Over the few days that I am here at the Oxford University Language Centre, Lucile suggested to me that I test out a few of the language learning text books available to students in the library and give some feedback-I've found it a very interesting task, and since I hope to visit Portugal in the summer, I (rather ambitiously!) decided to try to learn some Portuguese from scratch using the text books.

I felt that the book "Get by in Portuguese" would be an appropriate place to start and I found it was an extremely good introdutcion to the language. Not only did it establish some grammar basics, but with the help of a cassette it also had a focus on practical vocabulary and pronounciation that would be invaluable on a first trip to the country.

I followed by trying "Discovering Portuguese" which had much more information than my previous choice, including more grammar. However, the tape does move quickly and can be challenging to keep up with.

My final attempt (for now) with Portuguese was the book "Bem-Vindo!", which has an excellent content full of information for beginners. However, it's lacking in English translations and I found myself having to look a lot of words up!

I have also looked at two Italian books in my time here: "Better Reading Italian" and "Il Reale e il Possibile", which focus on literature and culture. "Better Reading Italian" has excellent background information on poets and authors and well incorporated, relevant grammatical points. I also found the 'Reading List' at the end extremely useful. "Il Reale e il Possibile" is an interesting book with a simple, effective layout. It's full of information with each chapter containing an article, information on an author and his/her works and a section on Italian cinema.

A final mention goes to the book "Curso de Literatura" on Spanish literature. It has a fantastic layout, which lists a selection of Spanish literature from different time periods and it is full of historical, political and social context.

I am also adding MORE LISTENING COMPREHENSION TAPES for:
French, Russian and Spanish as there is a high demand for those languages.
Caution: those relate only to the 2008 examination (French and Spanish) and the 2003-2004 (Russian and Spanish)
